I am Registered with the General Medical Council (3355215) on the specialist register for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with a licence to practice.
Until December 2018 I was on the specialist register for Oral Surgery with the General Dental Council (51613).
I have over 30 years of substantive clinical experience initially as a General Dental Practitioner followed by acute hospital junior medical and dental posts and from 1995 I held the post of Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon to the United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust (ULHT) until October 2009 at which time I held the maximum number (9) of local Clinical Excellence Awards.
As a Consultant Surgeon I practiced the full range of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMF) but I also cofounded and lead for ten years a Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Oncology Team which was a new service for the county created from existing resources to meet national and local network standards.
Nationally I served as Chairman of the Clinical Effectiveness Sub committee of the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons from 2006 for two years.
Apart from my lead clinician role for my specialty and for Head and Cancer Services, I held a number of medical management roles at ULHT including clinical lead for the Trust Cancer Services and Clinical Director of Planned Care. As Clinical Director I was part of a triumvirate including a General Manager and Head Nurse responsible for a Directorate with an GBP 80M budget and over 140 Consultants and Staff and Associate Specialist doctors. I held that post for three years from April 2007 to April 2010.
As a medical manager I developed an interest in Conduct and Capability and Appraisal and Revalidation issues and have trained doctors and managers on these subjects. In April 2010 I was awarded “Advanced Medical Manager” on completion of the British Association of Medical Managers “Fit to Lead Programme”
After early retirement from my substantive NHS Consultant post in 2010 I continued to hold a licence to practice withe GMC and kept up to date and fit to practice with regular appraisals and revalidation (revalidated until 2024).
From 2017 to 2019 I held a bank and an honorary contract with ULHT as a Consultant in OMF.
In 2020 I undertook an upskilling course at the start of the coronavirus pandemic as a Covid-19 support doctor and have served as an interim Medical Examiner and in the Covid Vaccination Hub at ULHT.
NON CLINICAL CAREER
In 2010 I obtained a Graduate Diploma in Law (Commendation) from the University of Lincoln (2011) and an LLB (2:1) from Nottingham Trent University Law School (2012)
In 2012 I passed the Bar Professional Training Course (Very Competent)
I have provided expert advice to both the General Medical Council and the General Dental Council on Fitness to Practice matters as well as on instruction from solicitors in personal injury litigation as part of my expert witness work. In 2016 I was made a Fellow of the Expert Witness Institute. I am now only providing exert opinion in ongoing cases and not accepting any new instructions.
I was a volunteer for the medicolegal advice help-line of the charity Action against Medical Accidents AvMA from early 2013 to May 2015.
In December 2015 having completed the requisite academic and practical legal training I was admitted as a lawyer of the Supreme Court of Western Australia.
In November 2019 I was made a Visiting Senior Fellow in Medical Law and Ethics, University of Lincoln.
I am a voluntary contributor to the Lincolnshire Refugee Doctors project as a clinical tutor helping the refugee doctors prepare for assessments that will enable them to register with the GMC.
